Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, located in the southernmost tip of Yunnan province, in the southwest of China, borders both Laos and Myanmar. The prefecture is nicknamed the "Aerial Garden" because of its luxuriant and multilayered primitive woods and tropical rain forests, which are teeming with animals and plants; many of these are rare and endangered species. How to get to Xishuangbanna?
Although Xishuangbanna is located in the southwest of China, the transportation there is still very convenient. Tourists can usually get to Xishuangbanna by plane, high-speed rail or long-distance bus. Generally, traveling by bus takes a longer time, so it is recommended to choose a plane or high-speed rail.
It takes about three hours to get to Xishuangbanna by high-speed rail from Kunming Station or Kunming South Station, and the ticket price ranges around RMB 200.
Xishuangbanna Itinerary Suggestions
A 4-5 day trip to Xishuangbanna is the best length of time to explore the highlights of the city. Below, I have provided some tour suggestions for first-time Xishuangbanna visits of different durations.
Day Trips
In the morning, we will depart from Jinghong City to Menglun. Along the way, we will visit the scenic spots of Lancang River, the famous Olive Dam known as the “Peacock Tail Feather”, tropical scenery and Dai villages. Additionally, we will taste various tropical fruits.
When lunchtime comes, we will enjoy an authentic Dai food in the town.
In the afternoon, we will walk across the Luosuo River Suspension Bridge from Menglun Town to the Tropical Botanical Garden of Menglun, where visitors can view various tropical plants and the scenery of Luosuo River.
In the late afternoon, we will return to Jinghong, join the campfire party in Manting Park, dance around the campfire with local people, and enjoy local specialties.
Xishuangbanna in 3 Days
If you have three days to visit Xishuangbanna, you can take your time to leisurely stroll through the area, enjoy the scenery along the way, and experience the Dai culture.

Day 1
If you are an animal lover or traveling with children, visit the Wild Elephant Valley in the morning.
After a fantastic morning, we can visit Manting Park in the afternoon. It's the most ancient park in Xishuangbanna, with a history of more than 1,300 years.then head to Manzhang Village to discover the lifestyle of the Dai people.
For evening activities, we can visit the Gaozhuang Night Market, which is very large. In addition to lane after lane of shops and stalls, there's also Dajinta Temple, located inside the night market area.
Day 2
Visit Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden. It is the largest and most diverse botanical garden in China, featuring diverse tropical plants and lush landscapes. You can take stunning photos here, capturing the beauty of the Tropical Botanical Garden.
For afternoon activities, visit the Xishuangbanna Rainforest Valley, which is located in the Xishuangbanna Nature Reserve and is a tourist scenic spot integrating ecological tourism and popular science education. It maintains the original tropical rain forest ecosystem. The development of the Xishuangbanna Rainforest Valley scenic spot focuses on protecting natural resources, aiming to fully showcase the original appearance of the tropical rain forest to tourists.
Day 3
Visit the Wangtianshu Scenic Area. The air corridor is one of the most attractive attractions in the Wangtianshu Scenic Area. It is a hanging bridge paved with wooden boards, and it is 34 meters high. If you are not afraid of height, please challenge yourself on the air corridor. It will be thrilling for you.
Xishuangbanna in 4–5 Days
Day 1
On your first day in Xishuangbanna, consider going to Jinghong City and taking a short rest at the hotel.
In the afternoon and evening, visit the bustling Starlight Night Market to enjoy the dazzling night view, try specialty street food, and shop for unique handicrafts.
Day 2
Visit Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden and enjoy the diverse range of tropical plants and flowers.
In the afternoon, we can visit the former Dai royal palace and Buddhist temples, then head to Manzhang Village to discover the Dai customs.
Day 3
Visit the Wangtianshu Scenic Area to experience the thrill of the air corridor.
Day 4
Visit the Wild Elephant Valley to watch the elephant show, then visit the Butterfly Garden, Orchid Garden, etc.

If you have more time, consider visiting some other attractions. We highly recommend Manting Park or Xishuangbanna Primeval Forest Park. And don't forget to sample the local pu'er tea—it's a must-try!
The Best Time to Visit Xishuangbanna
Xishuangbanna experiences a tropical monsoon climate with warm temperatures year-round, meaning you've got tropical fruits and flowers all year round. Therefore, you could in theory visit any month you want. However, the best time to visit Xishuangbanna is from November to April. This period offers warm and pleasant weather with minimal rainfall, which is ideal for exploring the region's tropical scenery and cultural attractions.
The rainy season runs from May to October, characterized by frequent rainfall. April is particularly noteworthy for hosting the Water Splashing Festival, a significant local event.
